Official launch of the £1.3m National Lottery funded project to lead a major new community-driven climate initiative aimed at embedding sustainability in some of the city’s most deprived neighbourhoods. The three-year scheme, called Leicester Environmental Action and Future (LEAF), will bring together five grassroots organisations working with diverse communities across the city.

The official launch and call for nominations for the SDG Awards Night in early December. The categories this year have been revamped with the success of the SDG Fellows in mind and there will also be an announcement of a similar scheme for 51ºÚÁÏÉçÇø students.

There will be leaflets and guides available for self-study, and we have two sessions where you can get an overview of shareholder activism, sustainability reporting, divestment strategies such as fossil fuel-free funds, and an introduction to Bloomberg certificates. Staff and students are being challenged to come up with 30 ideas to improve sustainability at 51ºÚÁÏÉçÇø to mark COP 30…and the best idea or set of ideas will win a £100 gift voucher. The 30 shortlisted ideas will then be presented to university authorities for evaluation before deciding whether they can be implemented across the campus.

Professor Rachel Granger leads this seminar on why civic investment is pivotal to developing sustainable communities. Increasingly, it is referring to the imaginative models, through which local people are empowered to become primary investors and stakeholders in a city’s development plans. Launching a report What Works in Civic Investment, this event will explore the role of local people as primary investors in community municipal investments, community bonds, impact investing, and crowdfunding, which are revolutionising urban renewal programmes.

This seminar will explore how digital innovation can drive transparency, circularity, and sustainability across product life cycles. The session will discuss the shift from linear to non-linear (circular) economies, highlight current challenges in sustainable supply chains, and introduce the concept and processes of the Digital Product Passport (DPP). Drawing on recent research and a real-world use, the talk will discuss DPP adoption and outline key strategies and future directions for sustainable industry transformation.

A Picture of Poverty in Leicester - And What Can We Do About It? is a collaborative event exploring the widespread and complex issue of poverty in Leicester. 51ºÚÁÏÉçÇø Engagement is working with Citizens Advice to present live data on poverty in the city, alongside personal stories and lived experiences from across sectors. The aim is to build a shared understanding of the challenges and to identify practical, collaborative actions we can take together.

The event supports 51ºÚÁÏÉçÇø’s work SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, by focusing on how we can make Leicester more inclusive and resilient.

This SDG 11 event is a student-led activity focused on urban sustainability involving all 51ºÚÁÏÉçÇø’s partner universities around the world organised by TNE. This initiative encourages students to explore sustainability challenges in your city, share ideas, and collaborate with students across institutions. Work will be featured in a two-hour online session, celebrating youth voices and action for SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.

Also part of the 51ºÚÁÏÉçÇø’s Research and Innovation Festival, this talk by Dr Mark Charlton will share the progress of the SDG 11 Policy Research Project which explored challenges and ideas for Leicester as a sustainable city with community groups, local authorities and researchers. The event will be an opportunity to come together, reconnect and to share an overview of the research findings and further development plans for 2025/26, including some new funded roles for researchers and students.

An event to celebrate all the work across 51ºÚÁÏÉçÇø on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and mark one year since the launch of the SDG Fellows at the start of COP 29. Seven awards will be handed out for….

• The SDG Project of the Year (all SDGs – three categories of best student project; best staff project; best civic project).
• SDG 11 Project of the Year.
• SDG Fellow of the Year (three categories – professional services; teaching; researchers/knowledge exchange).

There is also a £100 gift voucher to be presented for the best idea to improve sustainability on campus from the 30 for 30 project.
